It’s a new day. I’m writing this because I know like you, we are all adjusting to each new day. The effort required to navigate the options, decisions and communication needed to move forward is exhausting; however, it is necessary for the ultimate care and concern for our staff, our customers, our greater community, our shared humanity and also our own individual families. We all need each other and we all need each other at our best.
It’s disheartening to see the power of self-preservation during a crisis. At society’s worst we are divisive, self-focused, and inhumane. BUT, amidst the power at play, amidst the concerns and anxieties, amidst the spread of a virus that is crushing the lives of so many around the world, there is hope; we can write a counter-narrative together.
The focus of that counter-narrative is the care and concern for each other. Yesterday, I was emotionally overwhelmed after a Google Hangout with all of our managers and retail operations staff. The faces, the families - it’s all so real. These people are incredible, self-giving, and genuinely in-step with the welfare of their staff and customers. What a gift! Participating in that shared space was sacred. By that I mean that it was life-giving to us all. We moved forward from that space armed with plans and commitments guided by the greatest good of the other, all others.
With that in mind, here are the specifics of how Dogwood is moving forward right now.
We are still roasting, shipping and delivering coffee and will continue to do so as long as we are safe, healthy and have not been directed otherwise.
- We are abiding by and going above and beyond all guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the World Health Organization (WHO), and other local and national health organizations regarding sanitization.
We’ve reworked our production space, allowing for the appropriate social distancing at all times.
We have shrunk our production team down to the core and have asked others to work remotely.
All of our cafes are closed for the time being. We plan to donate all the milk on hand to Minnesota’s Central Kitchen.
- Our production space is locked and all deliveries and pick-ups are either left outside or delivered outside.
We are working hard to keep our roaster going. We are proud of our participation in systems that support coffee growers with stable, committed, livable wages far beyond other trade-based models.
We are also working to imagine new possibilities amidst these changes. We will stay committed to you all and appreciate all your support. Please reach out with any ideas or ways we can help you, we’re in this together!
It is a new day, so let’s write that counter-narrative of generosity, of abundance in commitment to others and keep our eyes focused on another new day, when we come out safely together having been reminded of the power of ultimate care and concern for the other.
